Dear Confirmation Student,
It is now time to think about selecting a sponsor to journey with you towards Confirmation. The sponsor has the responsibility to be a role model, a true witness of Christ that faithfully fulfills the obligation inherent in this sacrament. The qualifications for being a sponsor are as follows:
1. Must be a minimum of 16 years of age.
2. Be a Confirmed Catholic who has received First Eucharist.
3. Must lead a life of faith, in keeping with the function to be taken on.
4. Not be bound by any canonical penalty, legitimately imposed or declared.
5. Not be the father or mother of the one to be confirmed.
The sponsor must obtain a sponsor certificate from their parish priest certifying that they are qualified to be a sponsor (if the sponsor is a member of St. Joseph Parish of Epping, no certificate is required). Please complete the sponsor form provided and return to your teacher or mail to the rectory no later than February 29.
You must also select a Confirmation name that is a name of a saint. On the day of your Confirmation, you will be welcomed and fully initiated into the Catholic Church. For your Confirmation name, choose a saint whose life is an inspiration to you.
A letter to Fr. Mike is also needed. This letter should state the
Following:
1. The reason(s) why you would like to be confirmed.
2. The preparation you have done in order to be confirmed.
3. Do you feel ready to make the sacrament of confirmation?
You will be given time at the retreat to compose this letter. Please reflect on the above stated requirements so that you will be prepared to write this letter during the retreat.
The last requirement is the class retreat. If you attend class at the parish hall on Sunday evenings with Sue Copp or JoAnn Preston, then your retreat with be held on February 2nd. If you attend Maple Tree Sunday or Tuesday evenings with Robert Faust, Sara Rajchel or Arie Kidder, then your retreat will be held on February 9th. Both retreats will be held at the parish hall from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This retreat is MANDATORY. All students unable to attend must speak with Fr. Mike.
If you have any questions or concerns about anything discussed, please do not hesitate to contact Fr. Mike or myself. This is a very exciting time in your faith journey and I am honored to be a part of it.
Sincerely,
Lisa Dodge
